its ME

Why did you join ENGINEERING?

i was standing there with mike in my hand... many eyes on me and ears waiting to hear my answer..

Will you join my BUSINESS?

i still remeber i was in 8th grade when my dad poped this question on me..

i said NO straight way. why. i dont know ...might be because i never saw my family going for a holiday as business needs time....i dint want same life of my dad..

that was last time when my dad asked me that question.

then my family brought in the word ENGINEERING in my life...

scored quite well in 10th ..got into science college...

did well in 12th...got into ENGINEERING college....

it was my freshers party when this question was asked by my seniors..

Why did you join ENGINEERING?

i was standing there ... with mike in my hand... many eyes on me and ears waiting to hear my answer...

i gave some witty answer and i won best fresher award....

but this is one question where i remain numb....completely numb..

its not i hate this field or i did ENGINEERING for my parents...

i did it because i dint have any dream of my own...i try to give my best shot always and thus became an ENGINEER without flunking....

Why did you take Mechanical ENGINEERING as your field?

my interviewer asked.

"i love automobiles..bikes car etc...tats why took this field sir"

he was impressed and gave me job...but i wasnt..i was lying....

i never changed my decisions..i said no to my father's business, never ever in my life i felt i did wrong. i said no to MBA and i dont regret it.i njoyed 6 months after my degree and i am proud of it.

my friends say they are intrested in advertising field, robotics ,music etc and they are pursuing their carrer in that.but i dont have any such likings i guess..

and now i am planning to go for my masters degree in US by this year...

why?? dont know...

people say where there is a will there is a way

for me its where there is a way there is a will

When you find what it is you are wanting/looking for.. You will KNOW!!

You will really be passionate about it! that is the way I am with psychology... keep on getting your schooling and after it is over you will KNOW!!!

I sound like that baseball player in the movie "Field of Dreams" You build it and they will come!! HAHA!!

lol lots of people say NO to joining a family business. theres something more exciting about going out and doing something totally new! i get the same about doing english. I dont think I could say why but then i counldnt see myself doing any other degree - that counts for something i suppose

I agree with Cinder-single.

Nonetheless, tread along with what you've chosen, but keep looking for what you love.

Shucks it was the same for my brother and me. We both opted out of family's high profile business, and went our own ways.

Though in me dad found his own fulfillment of wanting to become to be architect himself...but was sucked into family business, being the eldest one and all.

Yet he never presurrised us, for taking up the business, let us do our own thing. And I shall always admire him for that.

I am happy, for your parents did the same. I have seen ppl who have had to achieve their dreams all by their own, and face ooposition from parents to make it more difficult.

I'm glad you and me got lucky.
Goodluck with your US plans.

Nice post.

Hi Nirmal!
Thanks for dropping by.. :)

I could quite relate to this post of urs..Coz even m looking for big dream in life.. I'v been hopping from Biology to Economics to Finance..with not much clue about where m headed.. I like what I do & always put in my best..But yes, it often feels as if that element of passion is missing..
Life isn't always crystal clear..At times, its just imp to walk along & enjoy it.. :) Someday while walking, there would be the realisation of the journey & the destination..
Made it too philosophical for no reason I guess..Anyhow, bear with it now.. ;)

you said it perfectly there Nirmal.:)Loved how you ended it with tat statement.

This is the plight of many Indian students..a lot of them have no idea why they are doing what they are doing especially if it is something very mainstream. They tag along. Some hate it. Some like it.

I love the way career counseling is conducted in the US with so many choices, opportunities, freedom, and independence. Good luck for your admission process!

i know what you mean. i don't even know WHY i chose what i'm studying (accounting..).. like, i have no idea what these people do! i guess the fact that accountants make a lot of money was pretty much what motivated me :s

and when i get asked that question, the "WHY" question, i wonder if people out there really DO like what they're studying or actually had an idea when they picked that. i figure professions just fall into people, there's no way anyone truly loves what he/she does.

Nirmal said...

@noelia..
no gal..many people have dreams of becoming an engineer or doctor or journalist.....and many like us who dont...

but wat matters is are we happy wit it...if yes then its great...if no then we will have to search a bit 4 our dream..
